Recording Diary: Day 1 – Set up, Lost camera and Pizza!

Posted on 15.06.2009 by kris

Yo yo yo! Well day 1 is over and it’s been very productive. I am extremely tired now as we’ve been in the studio for almost 12 hours. Here’s a little run down of what’s happened today….

We arrived at 10:30am and built up the equipment. We’re in a big room, all facing eachother and the ambient lighting really makes for a nice atmosphere. After the soundcheck we discussed the songs with Thomas our sound technician. He quickly got an idea of the type of thing we’re trying to record and we set up the amps and drums to suit this style. We want a big sounding, direct, raw sound…

I then wanted to start taking some photos and realised that I’d misplaced my camera. Damn, I thought… where could I have put it? Cue a big american style Missing Person’s Man Hunt. To no avail. My new panasonic camera was gone :-( I tried to focus on the music but all I could think of was where was my new baby, I’d only had it 3 weeks….

Anyway, back to the music….We’re recording songs in an order so that similar sounding songs are recorded one after the other as this results in less amp fiddling and tweaking for me! We’re also taking the approach of playing and recording the complete rhythm section live, that is to say the drums, bass and rhythm guitar together. The additional guitars, vocals and other instruments will be recorded as overdubs later.

We started with a groovy rocker called “One Chance” and nailed this one pretty quickly. We then moved on to “Feel The Same” where my Fender Telecaster really shines and Elmar’s drum intro to the song really sets the tone for this upbeat number! We then moved on to “Would It Make A Difference” and this one caused us some trouble… it’s a fast shuffle / pounding rhythm and boy did this one kill my right arm. Repeating this 6 or 7 times in a row is a real work out! By the way my man Warren plays an awesome funky Bass part over the last verse. God, he is a player!

After those 3 songs were in the bag Elmar, Thomas and I headed to the local Pizza restaurant and Warren headed home quicky – that’s the advantage of living near the studio :-) In case you’re wondering Elmar had a salad and Thomas and I ate a Pizza. We chatted about various TV series and all agreed that Lost and 24 are top notch!

We then headed back to the Studio at 8pm and finished off the day with the recording of “You Don’t Know Me”. I had some trouble playing this one as I was starting to melt down… it’s hard work this music business. It’s hard to concentrate so hard on playing everything so perfectly as it will be on CD FOREVER! Anyway, after the 6th or 7th take we finally got a great version of the song!

We then listened back to 4 songs and all agreed that this 1st day was very productive! We love the sound, the songs sound tight and the basis is there for something special…

We headed back to our cars and a little voice told me to look under my seat in Warren’s car. And wouldn’t you just know it… there was my camera all scared and alone! Reunited. A perfect day!

I’m gonna enjoy a cold Beck’s Gold under a hot shower.
Love from Kris.
Ps… here’s a little video recap of the day… proper in the studio videos coming tomorrow!
